a 19 mile day on Saturday 31 May 1975

"I sweated my ass off."

Stayed at Stokes LT (no longer there?).

Little did I know it, but this article was in the paper the year before:

Here is a shot of the trail on the USGS map of the period.

Crossed Highway 206 sometime too.

30th of May 1975 on Appalachian Trail

"Left Bel Air @ 1:00 arrived at Water Gap at 5:00 and hiked to Ed Garvey Spring arriving about 7:00."

My brother and sister drove me up on this Friday.

"Ate rice & gravy with 3 sardines, dumped the rest on the ground"

Hot and humid.

I found this map on the web that shows the AT.

Halfway point on the AT (19 May 1975)

Like the center of population in the US, the Appalachian Trail also has a halfway point.  On the 19th of May, in 1975, I passed the unofficial halfway point. That's my walking stick on the right that I picked up in New Mexico.

Currently, find the halfway point here.

Cumberland Valley PA, AT reroute (18 May 1975)

In the mid seventies, the Appalachian Trail still had a lot of road walking.

The Cumberland Valley road walk has been rerouted since 1975.

To read an excellent account on the re-route, check out Korostof, N., Yanher, T., & Johns, T. (1991).   In International Linear Parks Conference. Parkways, Greenways, Riverways: A Partnership for Beauty and Progress. Appalachian State University.

South of Susquehanna River on AT (17 May 1975)

A piecemeal attack to close the gaps on the Appalachian Trail, meant I had to hike section over long weekends.  To finish Pennsylvania, that meant I needed to hike between Duncannon and Pine Grove Furnace State Park.

My hiking companion was Rick and here are some pictures shot on 17-19 May 1975.  As typical i PA, the trail was rocky.

Darlington LT was pretty bad, so we camped out nearby.

Rick had to leave in Churchtown, PA, so I continued south to camp out near Little Dogwood  Run.

USPS Postal Carriers Food Drive this Saturday.

Time to pack up some non-perishable foods like canned soups, veggies and mac and cheese for the annual food drive.

Put the food in a sturdy plastic bag (double if rain is in the forecast), and place by your mailbox.

Time to tackle food insecurity in the US.

Future Dystopian Attractions: Benign Masochism in Dark Tourism

Working on this book chapter this summer so stay tuned.

Future Dystopian Attractions: Benign Masochism in Dark Tourism

Robert S. Bristow, Ph.D.

Ian Jenkins, Ph.D.

Alina Gross, Ph.D.

Abstract

The future of Dark Tourism is contingent on the tourist’s ability to encounter a safe experience. Given the current stress on tourism from the pandemic and war, tourists are expected to seek a more entertaining environment to escape.  Traditional dark attractions provide an essential opportunity to learn about our horrid past especially for those who seek solace to better understand why? One possible explanation that tourists are attracted to unpleasant destinations is the psychological theory of ‘benign masochism.’ The chapter explores the future of fright attractions by examining the cultural milieu of south-east Asia, central Europe and others.

Keywords: dystopian attractions, benign masochism, risk, cultural linkages, pleasure in the unpleasant, fright tourism

Free Covid Tests

I read in the paper this morning, (yes I still read a "paper" paper), that many folks are having a hard time getting the free Covid test kits.  Seems many pharmacies are still selling them and expect consumers to fill out paper work to get reimburse.

Well I have used this link twice and got my first set of tests in a week, and the second set in two days.

https://special.usps.com/testkits

I realize many people do not have internet access so this is worthless.

I got my third set of kits from the Jackson County (IL) Health Department when I dropped off old tax records to shred.  These friendly folks also sponsored our two visits for Booster shots.

Free too.

Don't have internet?  Well you can't read this blog, but if you can, please share this info with others and have them call or visit the local health department for help.
