Greetings,

Next year’s conference will be held in Portland, Maine, USA at the Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland, Maine. Details of the event can be found on the 2023 IASNR Conference website.

Call for Organized Sessions: Proposals for organized panels, paper sessions, roundtables, and workshops for the 2023 IASNR Conference are now being considered! Organized Sessions represent an opportunity to bring together a group of scholars to present and discuss work focusing on a particular integrative theme or topic. The due date for proposed organized sessions is December 1, 2022.

General Call for Abstracts: Abstract submissions for individual papers and posters for presentation at the 2023 IASNR Conference are now being considered! We encourage submissions that are relevant to the symposium theme and those that focus on the interactions between social and ecological systems. The due date for abstract submissions is February 1, 2023.

On a personal note I have not attended this conference for some years back when it was called ISSRM,  But I can state that it was a great conference, and if still living on the East Coast, I would consider travelling to Maine since it is within driving distance and I have not travel funds.  My list of past presentations over 20 years at this conference include:

International Symposium on Society and Resource Management (ISSRM) June 19-22, 2017 in Umeå, Sweden Symposium Theme: Contested Spaces: Bridging Protection and Development in a Globalizing World Greetings, Call for Organized Session Proposals: Proposals for Panels, Paper Sessions, Book Review Sessions, and Workshops are invited now – the deadline for submission isOctober 31, 2016, at midnight (Central Standard Time). Proposals from any area of societal relationships to environment and natural resources are welcome. Organized sessions are an opportunity to bring together a group of scholars around a particular topic. They can be a collection of 3-5 oral presentations with or without a discussant, a panel of experts on a given topic, a roundtable discussion, an author-meets-critics session, a workshop, or propose your own idea. Panels and paper sessions will last 75 minutes each. The organizer(s) should recruit participants and include these in the session proposal. Organized sessions will be highlighted and given priority in the program. Please submit your session proposal electronically by going to the ISSRM 2017 webpage and click on “Add” next to “Session Proposals” on the right side of the page. Please note: a login account is required before a session proposal can be submitted; you must also be logged into your account to submit a session proposal. Call for Abstracts: Abstract submissions for organized sessions, individual papers and posters are now open and due December 1, 2016, at midnight (Central Standard Time). RIP Dr. Wolfgang Haider (1953 – 2015)

I was saddened to hear about the unexpected death of Wolfgang Haider.  I first got to know Wolfgang at the early years of the Northeastern Recreation Research Symposium and later at the International Symposium of Society and Natural Resources.  He was always pleasant and encouraged me and others in recreation and geography.

Vienna ISSRM July 2009

While I tend to like to travel to more rural destinations, Vienna is a fantastic city. I had the ISSRM conference there last summer where I presented research on Medical Tourism (topic for a lecture on 22 April 2010).

The photo was shot on one of my walks around the downtown area and is the Staatsoper Opera House. I didn't get a chance to see an opera, but did observe waltzing lessons and had a dinner in a Palace one night. Our hosts put on a great spread. Oh yeah, the paper went well too.

I'd highly recommend Vienna for a trip.

ISSRM in Malaysia June 2011 !

Just found out that the International Symposium on Society and Resource Management will be held at the Sutera Harbour in Malaysia next June 2011. Time to start with the Anticipation Phase of the Recreation Experience and do my "virtual tourism" stuff. I have gone to this conference since my grad school days in 1988. I have probably attended the conference a dozen times both in the States, but also abroad in 4 different countries.

Gotta' start thinking how to Budget it. Whew, current exchange rate is about $1US to 3.2 MYR (Malaysia Ringgets), and air from BOS to BWN for this summer (not next year) starts at $3700US. Whew again.

And I still need to come up with a research paper topic. Oh well. Do a Google Earth search on the region to get psyched!

I did a quick search by title using the word "recreation" and found 36 papers with the recreation in the title. From my experience, this conference is heavily attended by recreation and tourism folks and this small number may not accurately total the interest.
