Kyra Schon - Happy Birthday

 Cult movie fans will recognize this name as the child actor in the classic Night of the Living Dead.

Night of the Living Dead

Film Tourism.

That is when people visit the sites represented or used in films.  I know Turner Classic Movies offers tours on both coasts so you can ride a bus and see all the important scenes of your favorite movies.

But Evan's City may not be on list, unless of course you are attending the Monster Bash in Pittsburgh, PA.

Bring a friend.  Remember you don't have to out run the zombie, you just have to out run your friend.

RIP George Romero

A classic figure in horror media passed this past weekend.  George Romero, best known for the living dead series of films died in his home town Toronto.

I wrote about being a fright tourist when I visited the cemetery where the opening scenes were filmed back in 2010.  If you don't have this film in your video collection, you can watch it on archive.org.  Pretty tame by the standards today, you might even find it on the Disney channel, but back in the sixties it shocked the world.

My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.  I want to thank Mr. Romero for his creative writing, directing and producing in the horror genre.

This year, like every Halloween, I show one of my 16mm prints to celebrate the holiday and collect food for the local food pantry.

This year, I will show Night of the Living Dead (1968 Directed by George Romero).  Set for the bewitching hour of 7 pm TONIGHT (29 October 2013) in the WSU Ely Campus Center, the show will take place.

Monster Bash 2012 next weekend!

Too bad I will not make it this year, but I have fond memories of the Monster Bash. Located north of Pittsburgh, PA in Butler, the Bash theme is Prehistoric Monsters.

Check out to meet celebrities, view classic films and visit the vendors.  If you like old horror films, this is the place to be.

Nearby in Evan's City is the famous graveyard shown in the opening scenes of the original Night of the Living Dead.

Fright Tourism and Evans City PA

The opening scene, after the credits, in the Night of the Living Dead, was filmed in the cemetery in Evans City, PA. Next time you are in the area (north of Pittsburgh), stop on by and pay your respect. This video clip shows some of the key grave stones used in the flick.

Finding this grave yard was a sort of pilgrimage to one of the greatest horror films of all time The Night of the Living Dead (1968) and directed by George Romero. I have the video, DVD and a 16 mm print of this film.

folks, I am showing Night of the Living Dead tonight at the WSC Campus Center at 9 pm. Direct from a 16mm print, it has all the scratches and hisses you remember when you saw this at a Midnight showing 30 years ago.

While at the Bash, you might want to take a short road trip to the cemetary that the Night of the Living Dead begins with. Use Google Earth to find this location and find the stones our characters stumbled over.

It is off of Franklin Road.
