31 March 1975

Snowed in the morning.  Premier rocky trail today, as much of the AT in Pennsylvania is known for.  Average better than 2 mph hiking too,

Camped with Billy and Eileen with Fritz the Dog at the Allenton LT about 5 miles west of Rt 309.  This LT was rebuilt in 2005.

"Some nice view but really did not take time to enjoy as much as I would have wanted.  But it was sunny and cold."

Lehigh Gap, PA, 30 March 1975

Here are a couple shots of the human caused destruction of the mountain gap.

The wool plaid jacket was the one I bought in Maine the previous September.

Here is an air photo from 1976:

Things have improved in the area and one needs to thank the Lehigh Gap Nature Center, among others.

Lastly I saw this plane wreck right on the Trail somewhere east of the gap.

And the approximate location 3 miles east of Little Gap.

Saturday, 29 March 1975

My second AT day in Pennsylvania picked up the mileage to 14.  Stayed at the new Leroy Smith LT built in 1972. This was south of Wind Gap and maintained by the local AMC. Complained about my sore feet since I had not properly broken in my new leather Vasque boots.

Here is a shot of the two pairs of boots I used on the 2,000 mile trip.

Return to the Trail (28 MARCH 1975)

When I last wrote about my end to end hike of the AT last fall, a lot of things had happened in 1974 and 1975.  I got a job in maintenance at the Korvettes store in the Harford Mall.  I always remember the manager welcoming me to his staff and me thinking the minimum wage pay that yielded $61 after taxes a week was not enough.

Anyway, after the holidays I started full time at Harford Community College.  I was there for two years, but that is another story.

So during my first college spring break, I returned to the Trail to pick up the pieces I missed in 1974.  On 28 March 1975, a Friday, my brother and sister drove me to the Delaware Water Gap and I headed south. My first night was at the Kirk Ridge LT that I wrote was "kind of lousy and the view is fair."  Dinner was a cup-a-soup, noodle beef sauce, chicken, pudding and made tea for later on that night.

NJ on the left and PA on the right.

I hiked 6.7 miles this day.

Spring Break Hiking Trips

All during college, and after, I would take backpacking trips somewhere in the Central Appalachians.  The trips were frequently on the AT, but I also did circuit hikes in the various state parks within a couple hours of my home in Maryland.  Here are some miscellaneous photos from the trips.

Starting your thru-hike of the AT

This webpage from the ATC shows the number of registered hikers heading north from Georgia.  Each day there could be around 50 hikers reaching the same campsite, pooping at the same spots and drinking from the same springs.

Enjoy and stay safe.

Does a bear s%$t in the woods?

 Well yes of course.

To learn more about sanitary facilities, see the ATC blog.

Alaska Cruise Tourism

There was a piece in the local paper about Alaska Cruises recently.  Seems cruise lines are opening up and the Alaska itinerary is filling up.  If the cruise is in your plans, here are some shots to whet your appetite.

Cold War Tourism

Be Prepared....the old Boy Scout Motto.

There is a rush for bomb shelters in Europe as the war in the Ukraine intensifies.

I learned that the Swiss have required bunkers in all residential buildings since the 1960s.

And to prove that here a couple of shorts in one building in Bulle, Switzerland.

So get ready to "duck and cover" my friends.

Delayed Opening Day

 Deal or no Deal?

Seems a delay in Opening Day is now for sure as the stalemate between owners and players in Baseball continues.

According to ESPN, "There are several macro reasons this hasn't gotten done -- the players' deep-seated mistrust of ownership, a desire to make significant gains on a Collective Bargaining Agreement that was gamed by savvy front offices, a nationwide penchant by corporate billionaires to maximize profits no matter the blowback -- but here's a micro one: At the onset of negotiations, owners expressed a willingness to reallocate the money that goes to players but not to increase it. In other words, the pie could change but not grow any larger."

Fox News reports recently that the players are not happy, but surprisingly there is little coverage in this news outlook.

For real news coverage see the New York Times.

My solution?  Fans go support the local school players, whether high school or college.  They need your support more now than ever.

My thoughts go out to the fans who had secured opening day tickets.  And more importantly, the workers who depend on income from the games like food concessionaires and parking staff.
