 Spring break is a perfect time for a backpacking trip.  For those of us on the East Coast, why not try the Appalachian Trail.

Spring Break Hiking Trips

 All during college, and after, I would take backpacking trips somewhere in the Central Appalachians.  The trips were frequently on the AT, but I also did circuit hikes in the various state parks within a couple hours of my home in Maryland.  Here are some miscellaneous photos from the trips.

Learning by Doing: Spring Break

Here is a neat paper on service learning trips during Spring Break.  Heck you can drink beer and lay of the beach anytime.  The Abstract:

This is a case study based on the Hospitality and Restaurant Management program at a
comprehensive Midwest university in the United States of America (n = 164). The sample
selection for this study was a convenience sample of the students enrolled in a meetings and
events management course. The purpose of the study was to investigate how the incorporation of
service learning/hands-on experience in a meetings and events management class influences
student learning and interest in community service. The results indicated that participants’
involvement in service learning/hands-on experience in a meetings and events management class
significantly influences student learning and interest in community service.

Spring Break Tourism

The beginning of the Spring Break Season is upon us.  The annual ritual brings the crowds to destinations both hot and cold and we can expect the same to happen this spring.  This year in particular with snow covering much of the country, we may find crowds along the beaches.

This also may bode well for ski vacations!  Especially since the water temperatures are chilly in the south.

Swiss voters reject six week paid vacation

That was the news found in my local paper as reported by the Associated Press.

AP notes that the Swiss are known for their work ethic and this rejection may be a vote of austerity in the economic crisis found around the world.

What impact might have on vacation travel? Compared to the American model of 2 weeks paid vacation, there is still a lot of room.

People are already cutting back on the traditional 2 weeker in the family station wagon (mini van or cross over).
