World Tourism Day is 27th of September

World Tourism Day
27 September

World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, invites all interested parties to take part on 27 September each year in the special celebrations taking place in their respective country or holiday destination.

For more on the topic, visit the UN here.

National Trail System Act - 50 Years!

The National Trails System Act of 1968, as amended, calls for establishing trails in both urban and rural settings for people of all ages, interests, skills, and physical abilities. The act promotes the enjoyment and appreciation of trails while encouraging greater public access. It establishes four classes of trails: national scenic trails, national historic trails, national recreation trails, and side and connecting trails. (NPS, 2018)

The public law, published on 2 October 1968, is found here.

An AT sign in Massachusetts.

This is Katie, my hiking companion in the early nineties, at a the Stratton Pond Shelter in Vermont.

And Brindle around 1980 at a shelter in Pennsylvania or Maryland.

When not in a shelter, my Gerry Lodgepole tent worked wonders. (this in Virginia)

What wonderful memories thanks to the National Trail System Act!

The Land and Water Conservation Fund

The Land and Water Conservation Fund expires in (link).  Between all the other distractions we currently have maybe some time is needed for our public lands.  To learn more see the AHS site.

In Massachusetts alone, the LWCF has done so much.

Astro-tourism

Thjere are a lot of themes under this title, so let me start by looking at eclipse tourism.  Last summer, I had a chance to observe te eeclipse from my front yard.

And then there is night time astronomical events, like a lunar eclipse. How about the northern lights?

The challenge for night time events is to find a place dark enough to see the sky.  This website will help.

In the meantime, move away from the city to a place away from stray light pollution and enjoy watching the skies at night.

Online travel news feed

Interesting news feed for travel is found at https://www.travelmole.com/.

Only thing I don't like, and it is a big thing, is that they do not publish the source.  So you  need to either check the source or take the information with a grain of salt.
