Lowest point on AT (4 June 1975)

Lowest as in elevation.  A 21 mile day, I crossed the Hudson River and paid 10 cents I seem to recall.

I phoned home to tell my parents on my plans to continue on the Massachusetts; I figured it would another eight days.  Camped at Indian Lake LT.

Saw NYC from Bear Mountain on this 4th of June 1975.

Here is a Bear Mountain Park map from NY-NJ Trail Conference.

A big shout out to the many trail volunteers!

and remember today is National Trails Day.

25.5 mile hike to Fingerboard LT on AT (3 June 1975)

Yes, my historic longest hike day that took me 12.25 hours.  "The bugs are eating me alive." This was 3rd of June 1975.

Here is a link to a Backpacker article about hiking to Fingerboard to see a pic (I have one somewhere, but I guess I have yet to digitize it).  The floor was rock.

I climbed through Lemon Squeezer earlier that day.

Now, I hadn't planned to finish my AT on this trip since I hadn't planned on hiking so far each day.  But at this Lean-to, I played with the idea.

New Jersey and New York border for AT (2 June 1975)

Back and forth I crossed the state line several times between NJ and NY as I hiked east toward the Hudson River.  Stopped at Unionville NY to pick up some food and mail my dad a fathers day card.  Lots of road walking as you can see from the morning shot toward High Point.

Water was scarce so I had to carry extra water 4 miles to where I camped some place east of Warwick Turnpike.

"Lost the trail twice.  Both times when leaving a road to go on a trail."  See road walking trail as shown on this USGS map.

June 1st 1975 and High Point NJ

A long day on the AT and covered 18 miles.  7 am to 5 pm.

Climbed High Point in New Jersey, see the newer map of the area.

And a selfie of me.

See my sweaty right elbow for the monument.

Stayed at High Point LT #1.  See my drying sleeping bag.....

a 19 mile day on Saturday 31 May 1975

"I sweated my ass off."

Stayed at Stokes LT (no longer there?).

Little did I know it, but this article was in the paper the year before:

Here is a shot of the trail on the USGS map of the period.

Crossed Highway 206 sometime too.

30th of May 1975 on Appalachian Trail

"Left Bel Air @ 1:00 arrived at Water Gap at 5:00 and hiked to Ed Garvey Spring arriving about 7:00."

My brother and sister drove me up on this Friday.

"Ate rice & gravy with 3 sardines, dumped the rest on the ground"

Hot and humid.

I found this map on the web that shows the AT.
