Mt Washington, NH Crowds

 I was so disappointed with the crowds on this summit of Mt Washington in late summer, that I didn't take any photos. But a bit north, at the head of the Great Gulf Wilderness, I did.

I later returned to climb it when the crowds were less.

I have read that a bulge of 40 NOBO are approaching the Whites, so on top of normal August crowds, a slew of 2,000 milers will add to the congestion.

Winter Hiking

 Back in the day, I enjoyed winter camping.  I had the skills, the right equipment and was prepared to turn around if needed.  This last point is important since you need to know when to quit.

For example I had (still have) mickey mouse boots that are Army design to keep feet warm.  I bought them from Bata Shoe company in Edgewood or Aberdeen Maryland back in the early 80s.

How'd I learn about these boots?  From an Hurricane Island Outward Bound trip I took in the early 80s also in the White Mountains of NH.  We summitted Mt. MOOSILAUKE.  We met in Hanover, NH.  It was a great experience.

Winter Hiking

Get out the snowshoes, maybe the skis and if not deep, just hike!

Here is a winter hike I took recently to see the Keystone Arch Bridges in Massachusetts.

Snowshoe

Last week's foot of snow was generally light and fluffy.  It fell on an inch or two of crusty ice.

I needed to increase the number of paths for our dog to walk in since the main path around the property was pretty well "visited".  So I figured a snow shoe path would be good for the dog to traverse.  She is pretty small and since the snow is still a foot deep, often you just see her curly tail above the snow.

Trails and hiking

With the mild weather we are having in the Northeast, simple day hikes are the best thing right now. I walked around Ashley Reservoir last weekend and caught a Bald Eagle flying over the un-frozen water looking for some fish I guess. The bird was too far away to photograph, but in any case, we stopped and watched for a few minutes!

It is amazing that the water department lets people walk here. I mean, try doing that at Cobble Mountain Reservoir and you'd probably get sent to Guantanamo Bay!
