Last section of AT constructed here in 1937

Hiking on the original section of the AT, after two days of warmth (38 degrees outside) we left Sugarloaf Mt and got to Saddleback Mt.

Part of this section was the last trail blazed in 1937 completing the 2,000 mile AT.

The 1989 USGS (1:24,000) map shows the new trail crossing the valley and rejoining original AT along ridge north of Spaulding MT

But recall in 1974, the MATC relocated some of the trail to the west to steer clear of the ski resort development found north of Sugarloaf.  But I suspect some the the original 1937 trail is still in use.

Much of this text is from my memory since my AT books are packed, but earlier maps do not show the trail.

Oh yeah, stayed in Fire Warden's Cabin on top of Saddleback and captured this sunset of Rangeley Lake

Tourists like the sun, right

So instead of the beach, what happens if you are in the Big Apple?  The New York Times has mapped it for you "Mapping the Shadows of New York City: Every Building, Every Block."

There are some great maps and graphics too.

Summer Re-runs, what better reason to get outside!

Now that the re-runs are in force until November or so, why not get outside and hike. After supper, there is still a few hours of light so hit the trail and get some badly needed exercise. Here is a really cool site for predicting sunrise and sunset and hours of daylight anywhere in the world. See http://www.gaisma.com/en/

Say you just arrived in Anchorage to do some camping. The sun would set tonight after 11:13 PM and rise tomorrow at 4:42 AM! Time to get up early to do some fishing.

Isn't this cool? I have a Phyical Geography Lab assignment that calculates this.
