Dark Tourism Research Idea

Any tourism scholars in the NYC area want to join me in researching this dark tourism future attraction?

Hart Island is future public park and full of unmarked graves.  See the article in NYTs Sunday Paper, 26 March 2023.

Wayah Bald, North Carolina 1974

According to the sign in the photo, Wayah Bald's elevation is 5,342 feet.

From my current view on Google Earth, the view appears to be looking toward the south based on the road.  See other map views here.

And George Mason University has another archived map here from 1932!

Rail Trails paper finally published

I want to thank my friend and colleague Alina Gross for taking the lead on this Rail Trail paper that sat on my computer for years and finally getting it out to be reviewed.

Allen Gap on the AT 1974 and later

Left Hot Springs, NC, "carrying (must have been) 50-60 pounds" of new food and my gear after a Henderson Court Motel stay.  The date was 26th of June, 1974 and a Wednesday.

Crossed Allen Gap:

where the State Line Service Station and Cafe was found. We had ice cream (great).

This next shot is a Google Street View from 2007:

and one from 2009:

Google Earth Pro gives you aerial photography of the area back to 1985 but the earlier stuff has a crude resolution.

Ripple

There is a road no simple highway

between the dawn and the dark of night

and if you go

no one may follow

that path is for your steps alone

Robert Hunter

Robert Hunter Archive

The lyrics to “Ripple” were written by Robert Hunter, with music composed by Jerry Garcia.

Full lyrics below:

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine

And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung

Would you hear my voice come through the music?

Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken

Perhaps they're better left unsung

I don't know, don't really care

Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water

When there is no pebble tossed

Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty

If your cup is full may it be again

Let it be known there is a fountain

That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway

Between the dawn and the dark of night

And if you go no one may follow

That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water

When there is no pebble tossed

Nor wind to blow

You, who choose to lead, must follow

But if you fall you fall alone

If you should stand then who's to guide you?

If I knew the way I would take you home

Backpacking Gear Cost (in early 70s) with DATA

This was my go-to book on camping gear.  Sure, I had been Boy Scout since 1967, so camping was in my blood.  But that was initially the car camping style where we would drive to a camp, haul tents and gear from the trunk and set up camp nearby.

Later I began to backpack, so we needed to carry everything on the back of our back.  So the camp might have looked like this:

Michaux State Forest and the Appalachian Trail. (early 70s?)

Here is my gear list from that period.

See the Vis-clamps on the tarp in the picture above?

Instructions to get AT Map data and LiDAR for Massachusetts

Instructions to get AT Map data and LiDAR for Massachusetts

First open your browser to

https://nps.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=cea61820e75c4ce997f866eea3aaf5b3

And after acknowledging the disclaimer, zoom into Massachusetts.  It will look something like this.

To add information for the trail, click on the 3 horizontal bars in upper right to get this view.

Click on the features you want like shelters, AT Boundary Sections and AT Lands.  At this point specific boundary data and monuments are not found.  I am still trying to figure that out, since that data needs to either be on your computer OR accessible via the web, but you need “permission” to get that.

Now is the LiDAR part.  So far, I have only been able to link Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine LiDAR data, but I am still searching for the states.  To add these data, click on the “plus” sign box in upper left of screen to get this window.

And search for MassGis lidar.  And then add “Shaded Relief from LiDAR (Tile Service) Map Service by MassGIS” to reveal Webster Road for this example.

Not bad for a simple approach.
