e-Commerce winners and losers

Here is a report on online shopping patterns related to the Covid-19 experience.

While this report notes a decline in camera purchases, I believe that it is the improvement of cell phones' cameras that is the real reason.  After all, my cell phone takes better pictures than my 8 year old digital camera.

Stay well and shop local instead of online if you can.

Sustainability on the Appalachian Trail Survey

I am reposting this link that was found on the Facebook page for Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association.

"Hi everyone, I’m doing research about Appalachian Trail hikers for my senior research project. If you could take my survey I would really appreciate it! It should take less than 5 minutes. I am trying to gather as many responses as possible, so feel free to share this survey with others. Thank you!"

Which Appalachian Trail state is the flattest?

Check out this Tableau link for easy to read cross sectional views from south to north for each trail state.

Georgia had some ball busting climbs, but overall all, appears "flat" compare to the other states.

Easyjet shareholders get £174 million dividends as airline appeals for taxpayer support

We certainly are not all in this together. (see Red Green wisdom)

Airlines are really being hit, I get it.  Nobody wants to ride in a tube with other (infected) people.  And we shouldn't be travelling anyway.

But when an airline sends out dividends totaling 174 million pound sterling ($US 215 Million), something is wrong here.

People should get something from their investments, but to give out that much money, and then get (ask for) loan money to bail them out....Come on folks.... we need to pull in our purse strings, suck it up and maybe not order caviar for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Keep employees employed and maybe the stock holders should not expect a huge payout.

UK Labour MP David Lammy described the move as “greedy super capitalism at its worst”.

Yesterday

Of course, yesterday's blog entry (7 April 2020) is false.

But I am pleased that there are people who are behaving appropriately during this crisis.  By appropriate, I mean practicing social distancing, helping others, acting polite, patronizing local businesses where available. And other acts of kindness.

And for those services we use, TIP generously.

Finally, remember the wisdom of Red Green:

All Trump Hotels to become hospitals for Covid-19

I actually saw this idea on Facebook.  This was my proposed post for April Fools Day.

What a great idea.

Trump is opening all his hotels around the world for the sick and suffering citizens who have been infected by the virus.  Trump Tweets (@thealmostrealRump) "that it is about time folks get to experience 800 thread count sheets and double ply toilet paper.  That is the least I can do."

And better yet, it is a tax deduction for his royal family!

Shattered Dreams

Now that the Appalachian Trail is essentially closed, and many parks and protected areas are following suit, what is a hiker to do?

Backpacker Magazine has set up a virtual hike for the AT.

Outside Magazine shared this.

And of course, just go to YouTube and search for virtual hikes.

So for all those wanna' be 2000 milers, Olympians and other athletes and any one else whose dream has been temporarily postponed, there will be another day.

In the mean time, enjoy this picture.

Lastly about 20 years ago, I wrote a paper on Virtual Tourism for Tourism Geographies.

April Fools Day

Typically on this day I post some nonsense. And it is usually about our buffoons in government and out parks and protected areas.  On the next day, 2nd of April I correct the statement.

This year it is a lot different, the buffoons are getting reamed on social media, so there is no need to add to that mess

So instead of making some political statement, I want to ask our readers to perform some

Acts of Kindness!

People have been super polite, and we need that to continue even after this crisis.  So help out a neighbor, clean up trash in a public area (practicing social distancing of course), ask and help out at a senior center, homeless shelter and don't forget about the pet shelters.  Don't put your self at risk, but do try to make our world a better place.

And remember, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day is coming soon.  thank you.
