Butler's tourism life cycle

This is a wonderful illustration of Butler's Tourism Life Cycle Model (1980).

Note how visitation grows in the early stages and then may level off before advancing to the next stage of the cycle. I got the image from www.fao.org.

Do you see how this might apply to any recreation site? How might marketing change the flow? What elements of time contribute to the model?

  3. There are several versions of the name.
    The original is
Butler, R. 1980. THE CONCEPT OF A TOURIST AREA CYCLE OF EVOLUTION: IMPLICATIONS FOR MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES. Canadian Geographer 24(1):5-12

And more recent, Butler's work is:
The Tourism Area Life Cycle (Vol 1 & 2) By Richard Butler, 2006

Since the original reference others have applied multiple variations of the name. I hope this helps!
