now, The Five Themes of Geography are fundamental in our study of Recreation Geography. Consider how each theme can be used to describe the earth. In particular, the human - environment relationship theme has recently gained scientific affirmation in human dimensions research.
And this geographic theme is over 2000 years old.
So while you learn about recreation geography apply as many themes as possible in order to understand "geographically" people, participating in some activity at some park resource.

Haiti doesn't even make the list
While searching for data on tourism in Haiti, I checked out this link that I have used to explore the competitiveness of tourism around the world. http://www.weforum.org/en/initiatives/gcp/TravelandTourismReport/index.htm
Haiti isn't even on the list.
Right now is not the time to travel to Haiti for a vacation, but please consider sending money.

Welcome to Recreation Geography
The first of many entries, this Blog will complement the course Recreation Geography that I am teaching at Westfield State this spring 2010 semester. I welcome the new readers (followers) as we explore the human dimensions of recreation geography.
This course deals with the human in a recreation environment. Three areas will be introduced: the outdoor recreation Activity, People participating in recreation and the park Resource. Finally, we will explore some contemporary planning and management issues.
Stay tuned.

Environmental statement for Mass Senate Candidates
Martha Coakley says:
Martha believes America needs a comprehensive approach to lowering our energy costs, meeting our energy needs and protecting our environment. Martha knows we need affordable, sustainable and diverse energy supplies that maximize the use of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
http://www.marthacoakley.com/about/Issues
while Scott Brown says:
I support common-sense environment policy that will help to reduce pollution and preserve our precious open spaces. I realize that without action now, future generations will be left to clean up the mess we leave. In order to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, I support reasonable and appropriate development of alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear, geothermal and improved hydroelectric facilities. I oppose a national cap and trade program because of the higher costs that families and businesses would incur.

Quake in Haiti
Time to help out the folks in Haiti. Low on cash, send a prayer. But every little bit will help.
Remember this is a country with a percapita income of something between $500 and $1300 US a YEAR. Your cell phone plan probably costs that much.

Jury Duty and Larry Buchanan
Yep, what does Jury Duty have to do with Recreation Geography? Well, not much except for the need to pass the time waiting. I took a book to read and thank goodness. I mean, they had some old Consumer Reports to read and a bunch of some kind of country music or something magazines to look over.
I settled for my book on the Films of Larry Buchanan. Who is this guy? Well he is known for grade Z films such as The Eye Creatures, Zontar, the Thing from Venus and Mars Needs Women. With titles like this you know you are in for a treat of mindless entertainment.
That is the recreation part of it.
So folks, if you get called for Jury Duty, remember to take something along to read. I'd might recommend:
Craig, R. (2007) The Films of Larry Buchanan. McFarland Press.

tourism down tis winter
yep, as if you need to know this, everyone is talking about the economy. And Tourism is down.
Just returned from Montego Bay and the folks there are saying the x-mas holiday is down to 30 % of the usual high season. Hotels are struggling to keep employees on. Just like the US, hotels are contracting employees so they don't have to pay the same benefits. Remember this and try to tip to the best of your ability.
