National Public Lands Day is September 26

Public lands are a national treasure.  We need them and we need to support the idea.

Get out and take a walk today.

Active Fall Hurricane Season

What are we up to?  the Greek Letters?

Beta is raining on the Texas Coast and Teddy is over the Maritime Provinces.

So what is happening this minute.

Will there be more?

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has posted this info-graphic on the Strategic Plan for the AT.

Once I get details I will post them on the blog.

Big Bertha Rocket Launch

Typically every Sunday, I go up to campus and shoot some model rockets with friends.  We are getting some spectators now and every one is wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.

I also do some video taping and here is one I did, (but downgraded from MP4 to MPG due to Blogspot's file limitation).

Baby Bertha has been flying since the spring but is in need of repair. So I build Big Bertha last week and am testing it.  Two flights in the video including one with an on-board camera.

It is a lot of fun.

Outcomes from A.T. Volunteer Surveys

The ATC just published the results from the summer survey of volunteers.  While the survey emphasized trail maintenance and not all the efforts of thousands of dedicated volunteers, it is still a good start.

 AT Boundary Monitoring Training

The study of volunteers at all levels yielded the following recommendations:

  • ATC should work with partners to offer available trainings to meet interest and identified needs. See the Executive Summary for more findings on needs.
  • Work to ensure that (A.)T. maintenance volunteers are trained consistent to minimum standards and there is a need to offer trainings to meet that need and the interests of the clubs.
  • Assess opportunities for a central method for tracking A.T. volunteer training.
  • Elevate awareness of A.T. volunteerism through orientation events that provide entry level skills as a component of recruitment. Such events are a great way to welcome new people.
  • Maximize the opportunities to cross-club volunteer training across the A.T. club network.
  • Retain the value and benefit of volunteer-led instruction to the vast network of A.T. volunteers.

Iceland Memories

I was trying to figure out how to use my GoPro as an external webcam to video tape some table top demos for Site Planning Studio, and found some old pictures and video in the memory card.  I figured to back them up on my laptop.

So today, unbeknownst to me, my Window's Video Editor created this video. I went in and deleted a few pictures and add a few others, but here is the result.

I also had to downgrade the MP4 file to MPEG1 to reduce it from 200 mb to about 15 mb since BlogSpot doesn't let me upload files that are too big.

So no more commentary, enjoy.

I shot the videos after attending a tourism conference.
